WOW Saddles:
Revolutionary Design for Horse and Rider Comfort
Written by Emma Harris, WOW-qualified saddle fitter and LANTRA-trained master bridle and bit fitter
There are a lot of saddles on the market, and plenty of good saddle fitters fitting them. So when clients ask why The Fitted Horse focuses on WOW Saddles, it is a fair question — and one that deserves a considered answer rather than a sales pitch.
The short answer is that WOW Saddles solve problems that conventional saddle design struggles to solve, and they do it in ways that are genuinely better for the horse. The longer answer is about what makes them different, why those differences matter, and what that means in practice for the horses and riders I work with.
The problem with conventional saddle design
Traditional saddles are built on a rigid tree — a wooden or synthetic frame that gives the saddle its structure and determines its shape. That tree must fit the horse's back precisely at one moment in time. When the horse's shape changes — as horses inevitably do through development, work, season, age, or time off — the saddle that fitted correctly at fitting may no longer fit at all.
This is not a flaw specific to any one brand or manufacturer. It is an inherent limitation of building a saddle on a fixed, rigid frame. The saddle fits the horse as they were, not the horse as they are.
The response to this limitation, in conventional saddle fitting, is periodic reflocking: adding or removing wool or synthetic flocking from the panels to adjust the fit as the horse changes. Done well and regularly, this keeps a traditional saddle reasonably accurate. But it is a reactive process — adjusting after the change has happened, rather than accommodating it as it occurs — and it requires the horse to wait for the next appointment rather than being correctly supported through the process of change.
WOW Saddles were built from a different starting question: what if the saddle could adapt to the horse, rather than requiring the horse to be fitted to the saddle?
What makes WOW Saddles different
Flexible panels
Where conventional saddles have rigid panels that must conform to the horse's back or risk creating pressure and bridging, WOW Saddles use flexible panels that adapt to the horse's individual shape and follow the contours of the back as the horse moves. This creates what is sometimes called dynamic fit — the saddle responds to the changing shape of the working back rather than imposing a fixed shape onto it.
The practical significance of this is considerable. The horse's back does not hold a single shape during work — it rises and falls with each stride, the musculature engages and releases, and the profile shifts depending on how the horse is going. A rigid panel accommodates one configuration. A flexible panel follows the movement.
Flair air cushion panels
Rather than wool or synthetic flocking, WOW Saddles use Flair air cushion panels — air-filled panels that distribute the rider's weight across a large, even surface area. Because the air distributes pressure rather than concentrating it, there are no pressure points from compressed or uneven flocking. The panels adapt continuously to the horse's movement and back shape, providing consistent contact and weight distribution throughout work.
The practical advantages over flocking are significant. Wool flocking compresses with use and requires periodic addition to maintain correct fit. Air panels maintain their properties consistently over time. When the horse's shape changes and the fit needs adjusting, air can be added or removed with precision — a much more controlled and responsive process than adding or removing flocking.
Flair panels also self-level to compensate for minor asymmetry in the rider, which is more common than most riders appreciate and which can contribute to uneven loading of the horse's back if not addressed.
Adjustable gullet system
The gullet width — which determines how the saddle sits over the horse's spine and across the shoulders — can be adjusted by a qualified WOW fitter using the system's adjustment mechanism. This means the tree width can be modified to accommodate changes in the horse's shape, or to fit a different horse, without requiring a completely new saddle.
For owners of young horses who are actively developing, horses in transition between fitness levels, or riders with multiple horses of different conformations, this adjustability has real practical and financial value. One saddle can genuinely follow a horse through significant changes rather than becoming redundant as the horse develops.
Interchangeable and adjustable components
Many WOW Saddles feature components that can be changed or adjusted by a qualified fitter — gullets, knee blocks, and other elements that allow the saddle to be configured to the specific requirements of horse and rider. As the rider develops, as the horse matures, or as requirements change, the saddle can evolve rather than needing replacement.
What this means for the horse
The clearest measure of any saddle's effectiveness is what it does for the horse wearing it. In practice, horses going into correctly fitted WOW Saddles consistently show:
Greater freedom through the shoulder. The flexible panel system and careful design of the tree do not impinge on the shoulder's range of movement. Horses that have been working with restricted shoulders — often without their owners realising — typically show an immediate change in stride length and quality when this restriction is removed.
The ability to use the back correctly. A saddle that sits with even pressure and follows the movement of the back allows the horse to lift through the back and work correctly from behind in a way that a saddle creating pressure or restriction does not. The quality of the paces — particularly in trot and canter — tends to reflect this quite quickly.
Rapid muscle development. One of the things I observe most consistently with newly fitted WOW Saddle horses is how quickly they develop topline when they are first fitted. When a horse has been restricted — even subtly — they compensate by using their muscles differently. Remove that restriction, and they start working correctly, often for the first time in a while, and the back muscles respond accordingly. This is one of the reasons the four-to-six week follow-up appointment is so important after an initial WOW fitting: the horse's shape can change noticeably in just a few weeks as muscle develops.
Reduced sensitivity and soreness. Horses with back sensitivity — whether from previous poor saddle fit, back history, or simply a naturally more reactive back — often respond well to the even pressure distribution of the Flair air panels. The absence of pressure points makes a meaningful difference to comfort, particularly during longer or harder work.
What this means for the rider
A saddle that works well for the horse almost always works better for the rider too — not least because a horse moving freely and comfortably is significantly easier to ride than one that is tight, restricted, or uncomfortable.
WOW Saddles also attend carefully to rider position and comfort in their own right. The design brings the rider closer to the horse with minimal bulk, supporting correct position without restriction. The balanced construction places the rider's weight over the horse's centre of gravity without forcing position — the saddle supports correct riding rather than fighting against it.
Riders who have previously been tipping forward, sliding back, or working against their saddle often find a significant difference in their ability to sit correctly and apply clear aids once the saddle is working with them rather than against them.
For riders with physical considerations — back, hip, or knee issues — the ergonomic design and shock absorption of the Flair panels can make a meaningful difference to comfort and sustainability over longer rides.
Why I fit WOW Saddles
I am a WOW-qualified fitter, and WOW Saddles are the brand I recommend and fit because they genuinely address the core problems in saddle fitting better than conventional alternatives.
Every horse I fit changes over time. Young horses develop and mature. Competition horses build fitness and muscle. Horses in rehabilitation change as they recover. Horses have seasons of harder work and easier work. In every case, the saddle needs to keep pace with those changes. The Flair air panel system and the adjustable components mean I can do that with precision — adding or removing air to rebalance the fit accurately, adjusting the gullet as the horse develops, configuring the saddle to what the horse needs now rather than what they needed six months ago.
This does not mean WOW Saddles suit every horse and every rider in every situation. No single saddle brand does. But for the horses and riders I work with, they represent the most effective, horse-welfare-centred solution I have found.
The fitting process for WOW Saddles
A WOW saddle fitting consultation at The Fitted Horse follows the same thorough assessment process as any professional saddle fitting: full assessment of the horse's back, conformation, and movement; assessment of the rider's position, balance, and any physical considerations; and fitting of the saddle with the horse ridden in their normal work.
The key difference is what happens after: the Flair panels are balanced to the individual horse with precision, and a follow-up appointment is scheduled for four to six weeks after the initial fitting. At that appointment, the panels are reassessed and rebalanced to account for the muscle development that has typically occurred in the first weeks of correct work in the saddle. After that, regular checks — typically once or twice a year for horses in stable work — keep the fit accurate as the horse continues to change.

Key takeaways
✔ WOW Saddles use flexible panels and Flair air cushion technology rather than rigid panels and wool flocking — this creates dynamic fit that follows the horse's movement rather than imposing a fixed shape
✔ The Flair air panels distribute weight evenly across a large surface area, eliminating pressure points and adapting to changes in the horse's back in real time
✔ The adjustable gullet system means tree width can be modified by a qualified fitter as the horse develops — one saddle can follow a horse through significant changes rather than becoming unsuitable
✔ Horses fitted in WOW Saddles consistently show improved freedom through the shoulder, better use of the back, and often rapid muscle development in the first weeks of correct work
✔ Rapid muscle development after initial fitting is the reason a four-to-six week follow-up Flair rebalance is a standard part of every new WOW fitting — not an optional extra
✔ WOW Saddles suit a wide range of horses and disciplines, including those with asymmetry, sensitive backs, back history, or conformations that are difficult to fit conventionally
