Question 1

How often should my horse have a saddle fitting assessment?

Accepted Answer

We recommend professional saddle fitting assessment at least annually for adult horses in regular work. Young horses under 7 years developing and changing shape should be checked every 6 to 12 months. Additionally, reassess whenever you notice behavioural changes, performance issues, after significant weight gain or loss, changes in work level, or if your horse has had time off.

Question 2

How long does a saddle fitting consultation take?

Accepted Answer

A comprehensive saddle fitting consultation typically takes around 2 hours. This includes discussion of your horse's history and work, physical assessment of your horse's back, evaluation of current saddle if applicable, observation of ridden work, and detailed recommendations.

Question 3

What are the signs my saddle doesn't fit correctly?

Accepted Answer

Common indicators include physical signs such as white hairs, dry patches, rubs, swelling, heat or sensitivity where the saddle sits, and uneven sweat patterns after work. Behavioural signs include resistance to tacking up, cold-backed behaviour, bucking, reluctance to go forward, tension, and pinned ears when saddled. Performance issues include shortened stride, lack of engagement, stiffness, difficulty with certain movements, and asymmetry.

Question 4

Do I need to buy a new saddle?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Sometimes adjustments to your existing saddle such as reflocking, gullet adjustment, or repositioning can resolve issues. We honestly assess whether your current saddle can be made to work or if replacement is necessary. Our priority is your horse's comfort, not selling saddles.

Question 5

What is the difference between a WOW saddle and a traditional saddle?

Accepted Answer

Fixed-tree saddles have rigid, unchangeable tree widths — they fit one specific back width. If your horse changes shape or you change horses, you need a different saddle. WOW saddles have a modular system with interchangeable headplates and adjustable Flair air panels, allowing the saddle to adapt as your horse changes shape over time. One WOW saddle can fit a horse throughout its working life.

Question 6

Is professional saddle fitting worth the cost?

Accepted Answer

Professional fitting prevents the far higher costs of getting it wrong — veterinary treatment for saddle-related back problems can cost £500 to £5,000 or more, and purchasing multiple incorrect saddles wastes thousands. The consultation fee is minimal compared to the cost of ongoing pain, behavioural issues, and reduced performance caused by a poorly fitting saddle.

Question 7

Do you travel to my yard for saddle fitting?

Accepted Answer

Yes — all consultations are conducted at your yard or livery. We cover Northamptonshire and surrounding counties including Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Question 8

Can you fit saddles for ponies, cobs and draft horses?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we work with all breeds, types and sizes. Ponies, cobs and draft horses often have unique conformation requiring specific saddle designs, but the principles of correct fit remain the same. We are experienced with the specific challenges these types present and recommend appropriate solutions.

Question 9

How much does a WOW saddle fitting consultation cost?

Accepted Answer

The WOW Saddle Initial Fitting Consultation costs £75, which is fully refunded on the purchase of your WOW saddle. Follow-up consultations cost £65. A Preloved WOW Saddle Consultation costs £150, with 50% refunded on the purchase of a preloved WOW saddle from The Fitted Horse.

Question 10

My horse used to go well in their saddle but now seems wrong — what could have changed?

Accepted Answer

Several factors can cause previously good fit to deteriorate: your horse may have changed shape through muscle development, weight gain or loss, aging, or time off. The saddle itself may have changed through flocking compression, leather stretching or wear and tear. Your horse may have developed back issues, or seasonal changes in condition and work level may have altered their shape.
